The Type 2 EV charging cable from uni - here in the version with a charging capacity of 3.68 kW and 6 m in length - comes in a functional retail box in which all parts are already stored in a bag. The bag is sturdy, padded from the inside, has a waterproof, rubberized bottom and a zipper that allows the interior padded lid to fold down completely. In addition to the charger itself, there is also a case open on both sides for the charger with drawstring on both sides, a strap with Velcro fastener and a wall mount for the vehicle-side plug along with corresponding screws/dowels. A well-done but very small print guide completes the content.

The charger housing makes a high-quality impression. The cable outlets have good kink protection on both sides; the cable is reasonably thin and flexible due to the low charging capacity. On the bottom, the case has six small rubber feet, which keep the charger stable even on smooth floors. For wall mounting, there is an oblong hole on the top. A quick guide is also printed on the bottom.

There are only two control elements: A button to adjust the charging delay - not the charging time! - and a button to adjust the charging power. This also allows gentle interim charging. The green bar uses 3 LEDs to signal the selected amperage; however, this is also shown in plain text on the display. In general, the display is a great thing, as it provides an overview of how long and how much/little has already been charged; this gives you an approximate time when the car could be fully charged.

As useful as the variable charging power is, the time delay is ultimately nonsensical. You have to calculate very precisely (or have good experience) if you want to work with the time delay and, despite all the variances, have a fully charged car at a certain point in time. But you can also load directly without delay and let the car's software manage it.

The wall holder for the plug has retaining lugs that hold the plug reliably. However, the plug is then no longer protected against moisture because it only fits in without the rubber cap. The rubber cap is attached to the plug's kink protection with a loop and can slide down towards the cable.

The practical test on the E-Golf was absolutely unobtrusive and, above all, without heating up the charger, cable or plug. You can leave the device running overnight with a clear conscience. However, given the charging capacity, you also have to. After charging is complete, it is easy to fold the flexible cable back into your pocket.

Compared to the charger that came with my e-golf, the complete uni set is a huge step forward. The charging capacity can be adjusted without having to be set in the on-board menu; after a certain amount of familiarization, you can also achieve ad hoc charging with a time delay of 80%.
